One of the most popular events of the season is the April “Poetry & Barbeque” pleine air poetry reading at the Laura (Riding) Jackson home site, held in honor of National Poetry Month. The Foundation is proud to offer free writing workshops to teens in the community. On the fourth Sunday of every month (except December), poets and performers of all ages – novice and experienced – are invited to present original work to a live audience at The Kilted Mermaid, a funky tapas and fondue restaurant in the Downtown Dine and Design area of Old Dixie Highway. The Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation is proud to partner with other community organizations, such as the Vero Beach Museum of Art and the Emerson Center, to bring top-tier writers and artists to Vero Beach, such as Edwidge Danticat, Greg Mortenson, and Rory Stewart.
An Oral History Program. The Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation has collaborated with Cracker Tales, Inc. to chronicle the oral histories of pioneers, ranchers and citrus growers in Indian River County.
