The Laura (Riding) Jackson Teen Writers Workshops, partially funded through a grant from Quail Valley Charities, are free, interactive writing workshops offered throughout the school year and are open to teens and home-schooled students in grades 9 to 12. Annual workshops include Writing the College Essay, the Cambridge University American Stage Tour’s presentations on understanding Shakespeare, and Spoken Word Poetry. Additionally, we have offered various workshops on Editing, Blogging, Computer Coding, and Screenwriting. Each of these dynamic workshops, taught by either university faculty or published writers, gives students opportunities to not only explore but also obtain valuable feedback on their creative writing.
Our highly successful college essay writing workshops have helped hundreds of students learn how to craft impressive college entrance essays that are sure to gain the attention of admission officers. Through the Teen Writers Workshops, local students have won college scholarships and earned top honors in state and national contests, including the Guideposts Young Writers Contest, The Concord Review, and the Parade Magazine and Zora Neale Hurston poetry contests.
Teen Fellows Award
Teen Writers Workshop participants have the opportunity to achieve the prestigious title of “Teen Fellow” by attending at least three workshops and submitting a polished work inspired by a workshop to our panel of judges. Teen Fellows have the opportunity to share their work at our annual Poetry Barbeque, publish in local magazines, and to record the Honor on a college admission resume.
IB CAS Credit
Juniors and Seniors in the International Baccalaureate program at Sebastian River High School and Lincoln Park Academy can receive CAS creative hours for workshop participation and for related writing projects submitted to the Teen Writers Workshop. Students at other schools should check to see how these workshops and writing projects may fulfill special academic and/or community service requirements.
Because Teen Writers Workshops are ALWAYS free to ALL high school students, we depend on the generosity of sponsors like you! Our Teen Writer sponsors care deeply about the literary arts, education, and the power of words to transform communities.
Becoming a sponsor for the Teen Writers workshops helps the LRJ Foundation cover expenses such as presenter fees, administrative costs, and workshop materials. Keep in mind, your support encourages enthusiastic contributions of others—family, friends, teachers and mentors—who volunteer at the workshops and cheer students on to success.
With the current, demanding, secondary curriculums and the challenges of preparing for high stakes testing, there are few opportunities for high school students to pursue creative writing interests. Help us provide these unique opportunities to our future writers and scholars.
