What kind of help do we need? Glad you asked! Here are some options:

Events Ambassador

LRJF Ambassador Volunteers are always needed to promote our organization within the community.  From farmers markets to volunteer fairs to special events, we are often given opportunities to “share the word” about LRJF.   Don’t worry if you’re not already an expert on what we do: we’ll teach you that as long as you have the energy and willingness to chat up the public! Some events are specifically youth-related and some are for the general public. Shift times/dates vary.

Assistants for Youth Programs

A core element of LRJF is hosting programs for children of all ages.  Some are held at the pole barn at the historic house & garden and some are held at our downtown writing center.  In all instances, we have an instructor who leads the program, however, this person could often use a helping hand from a volunteer.

“Jack of Special Trades” Volunteer

Sometimes we need an “especially specialized” hand.  Perhaps you have woodworking, sewing, photography, or painting skills.  Or even calligraphy or graphic design. Do tell! If there’s a skill to be had, we’ll most certainly have a need for it at some point in time and it’s good to know that we might have you and your expertise!

Gardener Extraordinaire (and that’s ok if you aren’t!)

Like digging in the dirt?  Communing with nature?  We have opportunities for you!  Periodically throughout the year, we host “Garden Days” when we spruce up our garden on the grounds of IRSC.  Weeding, mulching, and pruning are just a few of the activities that are needed to keep the area spiffy for our many visitors.

Office Helper

There are a lot of details involved with keeping LRJF humming and we often have office projects where we could use a little assistance. It might be organizing supplies for summer campers, helping with pre-event prep, or even painting rocks for our word garden.  Have specific office skills that you think we should know about?  Please share!

Historic House Docent

We maintain the structure & promote the education of the historic, architecturally-significant home of Laura (Riding) Jackson on the grounds of IRSC’s Mueller campus.  In season, the home is open to the public for tours on the second Sunday of each month and every Tuesday from 1pm to 5pm.  Docents lead the tours, giving visitors insight on the architectural elements of the home as well as on the noted poet & author herself.  Two hour shifts are available if you are unable to commit to the full four hours.
